CSDHL Championship for Huskies Midget Major
The Huskies Midget Major team earned the title of 2006 CSDHL Champion with a sweep of the 4-game tournament.
The #2 seed Huskies started the weekend with an early Saturday morning game against the #7 seed Express. The high-scoring first period saw 6 goals scored, with the Huskies squeezing out a 5-4 victory. Saturday evening's contest with #6 seed Crystal Lake also had more than half the goals scored in the first period. The Huskies had a particularly strong third period and walked away with a 4-1 win. It was back on the ice early Sunday morning for a game against the #3 seed Affton Americans. Affton scored first but the Huskies then took control of the game en route to a 5-1 victory. The three round-robin wins gave the Huskies a berth in the Championship game Sunday afternoon.
In the other bracket, the Flames and Atoms both went 2-0 on Saturday, leaving the two teams to duke it out on Sunday morning for the other Championship berth. This physical contest was tied 1-1 well into the third period when the Atoms scored and held on for a 2-1 victory.
The Huskies and Atoms faced off Sunday afternoon in a high intensity, fast paced game. Both goaltenders were strong and shots of goal were closely matched. The Huskies tallied in the second period and the score remained 1-0 until the last minute of the game. The Atoms pulled their goalie and the Huskies scored on the open net with just 9 seconds remaining to take the Championship 2-0.
